The January Launch Gets Made in November
SHOT Show 2027 runs January 19-22 in Las Vegas. If you’re launching there, you already know the show itself is the easy part. The hard part is the six weeks between now and the holidays, when the film and photography that will carry your launch have to get made.
It’s easy to plan SHOT Show content for “after Thanksgiving” and find December gone before the edit is. Samples arrive late, range days get pushed, and the holidays take two weeks off the calendar without asking. The brands that walk into the Venetian with their launch content finished are almost always the ones that started production in November.
Video and Photography Carry the Launch
The launches that get covered, stocked, and remembered tend to arrive with two things done right: a launch film and a full set of product photography. Everything else in the launch is built from those.
- The launch film. It plays on the booth screen, opens the product page, and carries the reveal on social and YouTube. It’s also the asset media and creators share when they cover the product. For KelTec, we built a launch film and the campaign around the MP50 and KP50.
- Product and catalog photography. Studio product shots, detail images, and lifestyle photography for the media kit, the product page, dealers, and distributors. These are the images that end up on every retailer’s listing, so they have to be right the first time. For Heckler & Koch’s VP9CC launch, we produced the photography and video for the campaign together.
- Cutdowns for every channel. Social reveals, booth loops, dealer email assets, and versions sized for each placement, all cut from the same shoot.
Shooting the film and the photography as one production is what makes the launch feel finished. The same lighting, the same setups, and the same story run through every asset, so the reveal video, the hero image on the product page, and the photos in the dealer email all look like they belong to the same launch. It also saves time. One crew, one set of samples, and one round of approvals cover both.
When CGI Earns Its Place
Some products have a story the camera can’t tell on its own. A new operating system, a modular design, or an internal component that sets the product apart can be worth showing in CGI, with cutaways and assembly sequences built to match how the parts actually move. For EOTECH’s SHOT Show 2026 launch, CGI joined a cinematic film and catalog photography in one production.
CGI is the biggest investment in a launch, and plenty of strong launches don’t need it. When it fits, we plan it alongside the shoot, so it slots into the film rather than sitting next to it.
Our Production Calendar for SHOT Show 2027
Here’s how we’re pacing January launches this year:
- Through mid-November. Lock the products, the story behind each one, and the shot list. Get production samples or final prototypes scheduled for our studio, and settle on any location or range days.
- Mid-November to mid-December. Shoot the launch film and the product photography. This is the stretch where a slipped week costs the most.
- Mid-December through early January. Final edits, color, sound, photo retouching, cutdowns, and media kit assets. Dealer email and embargoed media outreach get prepped here too.
- Show week. The reveal goes live across the booth, the product page, social, and email at the same time.
That calendar leaves room for one round of real feedback from your team and still finishes before the holidays. Starting in December usually means skipping that round, and the feedback round is where launch content gets good.
What We Can Still Build Before January
If your products are locked, there’s still time for a full launch film and photography package. If they aren’t, there’s more room than most brands expect:
- Studio photography on a short turnaround. Once samples arrive at our Phoenix studio, product and catalog photography moves quickly.
- Films planned around the product’s status. If the final product isn’t ready until late December, we plan the film so the shots that need it come last. Story, talent, and location work can happen first.
- One crew for the film and the photography. Shooting both in the same production means fewer days, fewer handoffs, and less time with your samples away from your team.
- Confidentiality built in. Your unreleased products stay with our team from the first shoot to the reveal.
What doesn’t work is waiting. A film that starts production in mid-December rarely gets the shoot days or the review rounds it needs to be the asset you’ll use all year.
The Content Has to Outlast the Show
The best launch content keeps working long after the booth comes down. A strong film carries the product page for the life of the product. The photography fills catalogs, retailer listings, ads, and the rest of the year’s social calendar. For SIG SAUER’s P320 MOD, we produced a cinematic launch film that carried the product’s story well beyond the launch itself.
That’s the real reason to start now. A January launch built in a rush gets you through show week. A January launch built on schedule gives you a year of content.
Questions We Hear About SHOT Show 2027
When is SHOT Show 2027? SHOT Show 2027 runs January 19-22, 2027, at the Venetian Expo and Caesars Forum in Las Vegas.
How far ahead should a brand start SHOT Show launch content? We recommend locking the shot list by mid-November and shooting right after, so the launch film and photography are finished before the holidays. Brands that start in mid-December usually lose the review round that makes launch content good.
Can launch content be built before production samples are ready? Partly. Launch films can be planned so the shots that need the final product come last, while story, talent, and location work happen first. Product photography generally waits for production samples.
What should a SHOT Show launch package include? Most strong launches start with a launch film and a full set of product and catalog photography, plus cutdowns for social, the booth, and dealer email. CGI can add a lot when a product’s internals are the story, but many launches don’t need it.
